Tee Talk – August – 2009

Greetings Ladies,

It’s hard to believe it is the end of summer already!  Where has this year gone? Well a lot has happened since I updated you last, so best get on with it…

Invitational Tournament: This day went off without a "hitch" and was a very fun day from start to finish. A very big THANK YOU to Sandy Wacek and her committee: Betty Plemons, Bonnie Miller, Kay Sabin, Martha McLaughlin, and Pat Bocook. What a wonderful job they did of planning and running this tournament. And thank you to all of the other members that had duties or contributed to the breakfast. A lot of time and effort was put forth by many members to make this a great day. We had so many compliments on the tournament, the fabulous breakfast and for the drinks we purchased for Bonnie’s hole-in-one! Those drinks bought us a lot of goodwill among all who attended our event. Congratulations to the committee on a great day and to Bonnie for her 2nd hole in one!

Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Association County Championship: This annual tournament was again held at the San Jose Country club and is open to members of any club belonging to the SCCWGA. We had 12 members from Palo Alto participate this year, I think a record number. Seven of those 12 placed in this two day tournament! Results for the entire tournament are posted on the bulletin board or on the website http://www.sccwga.com/champion-t.htm. Congratulations to all! Save the dates of August 2 and 3, 2010 if you’d like to give the “County” a try next year.

Individual EC Tournament - This tournament starts on September 3rd and runs through October 8th. Each week that you play counts so play as often as you can. If you have not yet signed up, there is plenty of time even if you cannot play each of those weeks. There have been winners that have only been able to play a couple times during the time frame of the tournament. If you wish to sign up, even after the tournament has started, please see Kathy Beadle, Bonnie Miller, or me. Entry fee is $5.

Patriot’s Day Co-Ed Tournament - This event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 13. This is our one and only co-ed tournament and our only weekend tournament of the year. We encourage you to bring your spouse, significant other, brother, son, or other guest (male or female – not required to be a mixed couple) to this fun tournament. We normally tee off late morning and then adjourn to Tom and Betty Plemons’ house for a nice party and dinner. Everyone brings something to share.

This is a fun tournament, so please come and enjoy. Betty has a sign-up sheet and will be collecting $5 per player. You can sign-up at golf or email Betty and let her know that you’d like to play and the name of your guest. Your guest must have a handicap to participate.

Members "under the weather" or "on injured reserve": Susie Kazul, Sandy Wacek, Peggy Baird and any others I have missed, we hope you will be able to come by for a visit and/or back playing golf with us very soon!

General Meeting – October 1, 2009 – For those planning to attend but not golfing that day, assume the meeting will start about 2 p.m. and will probably take about 45 minutes.

The Nominating Committee has provided a slate of prospective Board Members that will be voted on at the General Meeting. Those nominations are as follows:

Captain – Gwen Barry

Co-Captain – Janet Fimmel

Tournament – Joyce Sinclair

Treasurer – Sandy Wacek

Handicap - Martha McLaughlin

Membership – Ann White

Secretary – Bev Fritsch

Parliamentarian – Portia Leet

Pacific Women’s Rep – Betty Plemons

Ex-Officio – Linda Villers

Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the General Meeting on October 1st. The person placed in nomination must have previously approved that nomination and be willing to serve in the nominated capacity if elected.

Membership RenewalOur Membership Chair, Donna Forsman, has asked that I include a Membership Renewal form with this email. If you have any problems printing it out, please let me know or you can pick one up at golf in the coming weeks.

Membership dues for 2010 are due and payable October 1st and are considered delinquent November 1st that will result in an additional $10 fee. Total fees this year will be $66. PAWGC Annual fees of $40 and Pacific Women’s Golf Association (PWGA) fees of $26. Those belonging to multiple PWGA clubs will be able to request a refund from Pacific Women’s Golf Assn. of $16 for each additional club they belong to. If PAWGC is your only club, there will be no action for you to take. The form for refunds will be available sometime in January when PWGA sends them to us or you can check their website. You will be advised when they are available.

Reminders for the rest of 2009

Halloween Fun – October 29th Watch for the announcement of just what this fun will be. I am sure our Tournament Chair will come up with a fun game to play.

Shoot – November 12th In case of cancellation due to weather, this will be played November 29th. This is a tournament that the club treasury adds to the sweeps so plan to play and try to "reap the rewards" of a bigger payout.

Holiday Tournament – December 10th This is another festive tournament that the club treasury adds to the sweeps, plan to wear Holiday colors and join in the fun.

December 24th and 31st This will be an "open play day" with no game scheduled. Our Co-Captain will ask people to sign up if they intend to play so that she can give the pro shop an estimate of the number of players that day. Those sign ups should be done by early December to give the pro shop time to plan their schedule as the last two weeks of December as this is a busy time for general public open play.

Annual Awards Luncheon – January 8th – Mark this date on your calendar. It is a fun luncheon that includes the recognition of accomplishments of members during the year and the "passing of the gavel" to the new Captain.

See you all on the course!

Linda Villers, Captain
