PAWGC Tee Talk

February 2009

I’d like to wish you all a happy new year of golfing. We got pretty lucky in January with the weather, but looks like February is going to be a bit more challenging. It has been raining all day today, but I hope we’ll have some clearing in time to play golf this week (and for this rain to all soak in so it’s not too soupy out there!)

Board Meeting – January

The main topic for the first board meeting of the year is the budget. The budget for 2009 was approved with no significant changes from last year due to the good shape of the club bank balance.

Membership book corrections

If you haven’t noticed in your calendar for February yet, the dates for the last 2 weeks are incorrect. Please change the dates for the 15th through the 28th. Everything else seems to be ok and all of the information is on the correct days.

New Local Rule for Temporary Fence on #11

Several of you have asked what should be done for the new fence on hole # 11. I talked with the pro shop and they have indicated that we should go with the following for as long as the city decides to keep the fence in place:

If your ball comes to rest at or near the fence, causing interference with your swing or stance, take one club length relief (no closer to the hole) with no penalty. This would also be the case if your ball was on the water side of the fence, sitting in the grass and dry. If you would have had a reasonable place to stand and hit the ball, had the fence not been present, you can take the same relief. If you couldn’t have played your ball, with or without the fence, proceed under standard rules of a water hazard or unplayable lie, whichever is appropriate under the circumstance.

I hope this clears up any confusion and will give us a guide for the coming weeks. If you still have any questions, please contact a member of the board and we’ll get a ruling for you before you sign and turn in your scorecards.

Post your scores! – a message from your Handicap Chair, Sandy Wacek

In 2008 the USGA established a process to ensure the integrity and fairness of the Handicap system.  As a user of the USGA's GHIN system for establishing and maintaining handicaps, we are compelled to follow that process.  Thus, it is the responsibility of each golfer to post their scores whenever and wherever they play and it my responsibility as Handicap Chair to ensure that this posting is done and done correctly when playing at Palo Alto on Thursdays.   When playing on other days and at other courses, you should also post all scores.

Each member should post their score prior to leaving the course.  Please be sure to post the ESC score, if applicable.  Should you post a score and then realize you posted a wrong score, please e-mail me asap and I can correct the score for you.  Should you forget to post at the course and then post using the internet, please send me an e-mail  (fremont0615@yahoo.com) and tell me you have posted via the internet so I don't double post the score when I check the cards.  I will be checking each card for ESC adjustments that should be made to the gross score before posting and if all members posted their scores.  How is this done?  Within a few hours of posting at the club, I have access to the computer records and can compare the cards versus what was actually posted to GHIN.  If they don't match, or the computer does not reflect that a score was posted, I will make those corrections or in the case of no posting, will post for the member.  Each member will receive an e-mail from me as to the correction made or that a posting has been done for play that day.  Please do not become a member that receives frequent notices from me that your score either wasn't posted or the score posted is not correct.

Scorecards are being signed and attested to that do not reflect the adjustments (ESC).  There would be fewer errors in posting if all cards were completed in their entirety before being signed including showing all ESC adjustments.

Tournament Chair – Janet Fimmel

Janet has several new games selected for us to try out this year, as well as all of your favorites. She is also experimenting with printing the game description on the back of the score cards for some of the games. We hope this will help clarify how to play those games once you get out on the course!

Ringer Tournament has started this past week with Trophy Day

A reminder from your Ringer Tournament chairman, Peggy Baird. This tournament is a year long EC type of tournament that starts on the first play day of February and ends on the last play day of November. If you haven’t had a chance to sign-up, it is still not too late. The entry is $5 for the entire year and Peggy will start tracking your scores with the date you sign-up (not retroactively back to the beginning.) Please send an email to Peggy Baird  (pegbaird@sbcglobal.net) and she will get you started.
